Plain as Dirt
I guess you could say that I’m just as “plain as dirt.”
I heard that phrase a long time ago from a person that I very much looked up to, and it really shocked me. How could someone that I admire so much see themselves as “plain as dirt?”
After I thought about it awhile, I discovered that what he was simply pointing out that he was just a normal person. A normal person doing extraordinary things.
I’ve often thought about what it means to be plain as dirt. Good loamy topsoil is what our whole society depends upon. Without the dirt to grow our crops, we would quickly waste away.
In order to grow good ideas, you’ve got to have lots of dirt. And thus, I hope to become the great soil that will help grow your ideas and ambitions beyond the basic to the extraordinary.
Why I started PT Outside the Box
For a long time, I’ve been thinking about how I could improve and change our profession. I’ve wanted to expand our horizons and help others find success and meaning in the extremely rewarding field of rehabilitation.
I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart, and I love hearing and sharing success stories of how others have created greatness in their own lives.
Thus, when the idea hit me to begin a podcast about PT careers “outside the box,” I immediately went home and began fleshing out the idea. What began as a small project is growing into a movement–a paradigm shift.
Who I Am
As I said earlier, I’m just as plain as dirt.
I grew up in rural Idaho where my family has a small farm. I spent my early days changing irrigation pipes and chasing cows and sheep.
I struggled trying to figure out what I would do with my life, and a major turning point happened when I joined the pre-PT club at my university. After some job shadowing and research, I decided that becoming a physical therapist was a really good fit for my skill-set.
After graduation, I began my first job as a staff PT in a clinic near my hometown. You could say that I “cut my teeth” in the field by working with a variety of patients and gaining some good work experience.
But I somehow always knew that I was destined for more.
What I Do
Not wanting to be only a spectator, I decided that it was time to become a player. I began my first online business in 2012 helping students prepare to take and pass the NPTE. What started out as a very grass-roots effort has grown to a national brand and is continuing to help thousands of students enter their dream field.
I am passionate about helping therapists achieve their ideal career, and it has naturally flowed into the PT Outside the Box podcast.
In the show, we talk about the many ways you can avoid career burnout and begin a journey towards your ideal career path.
I’m a family man more than anything else. I podcast, teach, and write so that I can support my family and spend time with my kids while they are young. I only get one shot to be a dad to my sweet kids, and I want to make the most of it. I know that many of you strive for the same goals, and I hope that this podcast will give you some inspiration to reach higher and find a way to support your family in the best way possible.
